A residential service for Young People that listens to the people who use it
Common Thread offers creative solutions for looked after children (LAC) in a residential environment and training for those who work with these children. Our Aims Are: To deliver the highest quality of care to young people To share our experiences and successes with others interested in improving outcomes To create care environments which result in sustained excellence from staff To consult and teach on our systems where this would be valuable
Common Thread has established Common Ground our short term intervention service. This service offers round the clock care for children who are subject to care orders and are experiencing a placement breakdown or in need of respite. At present we offer small houses for up to two young people at a time as part of our Crisis Intervention service. These are created around the principles that young people who are in crisis cannot be expected to positively contribute to their future and make decisions until they have been given time to gain some trust and adjust to their circumstances, including their new environment. They need skillful ways of enabling them to see the benefits of taking some level of responsibility for themselves and their actions.
We have now opened our first long term residential home near Thornhill in Dumfries and Galloway named Dalveen College. Nestled protectively in the Lowther hills it offers a wonderful opportunity for those who stay with us to develop and grow. We expect this home will be integrated into the community by way of the facilities we provide. These include educational assessments, a range of therapies, music, pottery, educational support to name a few. Our ethos is based on person centred practice, N.L.P and solution focused skills.
Common Thread also offers specialist training for carers - parents, foster carers or residential care workers. This training uses the principles of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) combined with our personal experience of delivering care to offer a remarkably successful “tool box” especially for those managing challenging behaviour.
